Salt is one of the items that has never disappeared from the kitchen since ancient times.  Although centuries ago, it was considered a precious commodity, today you can buy salt at very affordable prices.

There are many side effects from the indiscriminate use of sodium chloride in the diet as it has consequences such as hypertension, kidney problems and fluid retention.  However, salt can be a great help when cleaning the home. If, for example, the doctor forbids you to consume salt, you can take advantage of using it for cleaning the home.

Using salt to clean the house

There are a wide series of uses that you can give to salt to clean the home and repair or maintain some objects in perfect condition.

For the kitchen

Deodorize and clean the refrigerator. Apply salt water and seltzer to the door and interior for a few minutes before defrosting or cleaning.

To eliminate the mess that comes from burns or spills from pots, pans, pots, ovens and burners. Apply a good amount of salt and remove with paper towels.

Remove wine stains from fabric. Apply a generous amount to the area and pat dry in an upward motion. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse the piece of clothing. If it’s a rug, rub it in with salt and then shake it off.

Remove rust stains from fabric by mixing a little salt with lemon juice. Moisten the area well. Then let it dry in the sun. Then wash as usual.

Remove grease from iron utensils. Sprinkle some salt on top of them and let it settle. Remove any excess and wash as usual. You can use the same technique to remove dark coffee and tea marks from cups.

In other areas of the house

Erase white circles on wooden furniture that came from a vase or something wet. Apply a layer of oil and salt to the stain, scrub and then let it rest for an hour and finally remove it.

Reduce odor in glass or plastic bottles and jars, more so in plastic because it is where the odor is more easily concentrated. Add a tablespoon of salt inside the container and leave it for a few minutes. Wash normally with detergent or a natural cleaning product.

To renew objects in the home

Remove the stains from the bathtub and the sink, making a mixture of turpentine and salt. Apply to surfaces and let it sit for 15 minutes. As a result, that yellow color will disappear. Then wipe with a damp sponge to remove anything extra.

Clean the floors of the house. Add half a cup of salt to a bucket full of warm water and clean as you normally do. If you have hardwood floors, this will help make it look brighter. If it is tile, this will prevent it from getting dirty quickly.

Bring back the shine to bronze, pewter, silver and copper pieces. Make a mixture of equal parts of vinegar, flour and salt. Apply to objects and let it sit for fifteen minutes. Gently remove with a brush and dry with a dry cloth. This will increase its shine.

Avoid grease and odor from accumulating in the sink. Make a paste of vinegar and salt and pour it down the drain.

Prevent the iron from sticking to clothing by adding a little salt to the starch. This will also make cotton sheets and clothing look new.

Use of salt to clean piano keys. Put salt and lemon juice on a soft cloth and scrub the keys to remove stains caused by moisture, the passage of time, or use. You can use the same treatment for marble or Ivory pieces.

Increase the life of brooms. Before using these work tools, it is recommended to immerse the broom in hot salted water before its first use.

Lighten the colors of clothes when you wash, such as curtains or natural fiber rugs.

Remove sweat marks from clothing. Put four tablespoons of salt in a liter of hot water. Rub the garment with a sponge until the mark disappears.
