An environmentally friendly option is to sow seeds in biodegradable containers, which in addition to contributing to recycling, also gives us the opportunity to have small gardens practically anywhere in our house.
If you’re starting seed-based plants this year, don’t waste your hard-earned money on small garden pots. Save a little money by growing your own seeds with initiative from recycled materials, below we will mention the best option to carry it out.
How are the containers biodegradable?
These plant containers can be used for all kinds of small plants. They are beneficial for plant growth, as they can help reduce transplant shock (which will help with your survival rate), reduce transplant costs, and avoid disposable plastics. They are hardy enough for short-term production, and can be planted directly into the ground once the roots are able to grow out of the container or are already looking to break out.
How to make biodegradable containers.
To make your own biodegradable mini-pot (just as it sounds, no need to transplant), you will need only these tools to carry it out: scissors and a roll of toilet paper or paper towels.
- With the scissors, cut six to eight small slots in one end of the toilet paper roll (if using a paper towel roll, cut the roll into three pieces before beginning this step).
- Fold the strips down so they overlap.
- Carefully fill with moist soil, and put it on a baking sheet.
- Plant one seed per roll. After germination, you will only have to plant with a container and all your seedlings either in the garden or larger pots.
If you don’t mind transplanting the seedlings, you can use all kinds of recyclable materials for germination: takeout containers, plastic cups, soda bottles, and shoe boxes – just to name a few.
