The fly’s addition to cockroaches, ants, ticks, are one of the most irritating insects on earth. Although their appearance is harmless, they are actually one of the deadliest insects present in homes. Flies are the carriers of dangerous diseases like salmonella (the food poisoning bacteria), typhoid fever and cholera.
These pesky little critters are often difficult to deter. But fortunately, there are some plants that flies don’t like at all. In reality, these plants generate some type of repellent oils from insects, such as flies, and gradually secrete small amounts of this oil on their leaves and release it into the air. And this is something that flies don’t like.
Most people don’t realize how many natural remedies there are for everyday problems, so they just go for whatever chemical is being sold. Did you know that there are many herbs that are naturally repellent to flies? These are some:
1. Basil
Anyone who knows anything about herbs knows that basil is great for cooking. It’s easy to grow and smells divine! Humans love basil. But guess who hates basil? House flies. House flies are absolutely rejected by basil. The best way to use this all-natural remedy is to plant the basil yourself outside. If you have a large outdoor picnic area, try using small pots of this herb on your picnic tables. You will be fulfilling two objectives at the same time. While the grill is taking place, you can easily access the basil for cooking, and the flies will linger far away during your lovely summer meal. Basil, in addition to being delicious, is one of the most effective fly repellent herbs.
2. Bay Leaves
This is another herb loved by cooks around the world. Nothing puts the finishing touch to a great pot for roasting like some bay leaves tossed in. But once again, as much as we love it, flies hate them. Other insects hate them too, like earwigs and weevils, to name a few. Keep these herbs growing nearby to discourage pesky pests.
3. Lavender
The lavender is the herb for relaxation. The soothing, soothing scent can really make a bubble bath a true spa experience. People have been using lavender for centuries to make their houses and clothes smell sweet. It is also used a little for cooking. However, flies are not impressed with lavender. Hang some decorative dried lavender around your house to keep buzzing critters away.
4. Tansy
Tansy is not as well-known as some of the other herbs we have listed here. Tansy was used in ancient times as a propagating herb because it is believed to have cleansing properties. It is a pleasant base plant for home gardening, as it is very similar to marigolds. It has the added advantage that it is one of the fly repellents herbs. Flies are not the only insects that find tansy repellent. Ants, fleas, and moths will also leave if this plant is around. An added bonus is that this plant even discourages mice from hanging around.
5. Pennyroyal
This can be one of the most versatile fly repellent herbs. This member of the mint family repels flies, mosquitoes, and fleas. However, when planted on your property, and particularly around the foundation of your house, this interesting herb can help protect you from mice and ants. Instead of “killing two birds” with one stone you will repel five pests with one herb. You should be careful if you decide to plant this herb around your house, however. Pennyroyal can be dangerous to children and pets if consumed in large quantities. Please keep this in mind when using pennyroyal.
Clean and Green
When you choose a more natural path around your home, you can have more peace of mind knowing that your family will be safe from harmful chemicals and their side effects. People don’t realize that there is almost always a natural alternative to chemical solutions when it comes to pest control, cleaning products, and many other household items. A little research and care can go a long way in preserving the health of your families in mosquito season.
